The Car:

  • 1991 Mazda Miata (orginally silver) with factory hard top with A/C and power steering (which I deleted) with 153000 miles on the chassis.
  • Previous Owner converted it to 1995 M-edition (1.8L engine swap, 1.8l Miata brakes, Merlot Mica paint, tan leather interior including new dash and soft top)
  • Factory R-Package trunk lip spoiler (replaced the Racing Beat trunk spoiler that was on the car when I bought it)

The Aftermarket Goodies:

  • When I bought it it had a Flyin' Miata FM2 Turbo Kit, SS exhaust and sway bars, Racing Beat body kit, 4.1 ratio Torsen limited-slip differential, SSR Spec-A (not the lightweigh Comps) 16x7 wheels with 215/45/16 Toyo T1-R's, Hard Dog 4-point sport roll bar. Below are the changes I have made:
  • Swapped to 15x7 Kosei K1 TS +35mm offset with 225/45 Hankook RS2's in front and 225/50 in the rear
  • Front Flyin' Miata Sway bar (removed rear sway for better corner exit, it puts more power down).
  • Ohlin's PCV adjustable coilovers. Adjust rebound and compression together via "clicky knob" and has adjustable spring perches for height adjustability.
  • Momo Start race seats with G-force 6-point harnesses
  • Hard Dog custom 6-point roll bar. I had them use the rear section of their cage and then increase the size to 1.75x.120in tube and add door bars.
  • Good Win Racing's BBK Kit with Wilwood Smart front pads and Porterfield R4S rear pads. For track days I swap out to Wilwood E compound front pads.
  • Stainless Steel brake lines

The LS1 Swap:

  • Racing Concept's LS1 mounting kit with custom clutch hydraulics, driveshaft and axles
  • 2002 Chevy Camaro Stock LS1, T56 Trans (with hurst shifter), wiring harness, accessories and PCM with 20,000miles when salvaged. I bought it from Cleveland Pick-A-Part.
  • Ford 8.8 LSD from 2002 Ford Explorer with 3.55 gears.
  • Custom Aluminum Radiator from PRC Inc.
  • Walbro 255 fuel pump with 6AN SS fuel lines and fittings.
  • 1999 Chevy Corvette fuel filter/regulator
  • Cyberdyne Speedo
  • Car weighs about 2550 lbs with 3/4 tank of fuel, full interior, no PS, no AC (except for evaporator under dash), both hard and soft tops on and the 6-point roll bar. This was from very accurate Longacre scales.
  • WITH me in the car, it has 52.3% of the weight on the front and 51% wieght on the left. Cross weight is 50.2%

The Perfomance:

  • 328rwhp and 355wtq which equates to about 385hp and 417 lb-ft of torque at the crank.
  • 1/4 mile in 11.5 sec (this is what Dan at Racing Concepts ran with his stock LS1 powered miata on BFG Drag Radials)
  • My old turbo setup dynoed at 225whp/tq and should have ran about at 12.8sec 1/4 mile.

Testing Numbers:


  • So I used my car clubs Traqmate data acquisition system to get a couple raw numbers.
  • Keep in mind I only have 7/8 throttle as I have not modified the throttle body cam (the pulley the throttle cable wraps around). I look at it as "training wheels" for learning how to drive a ls1 Miata...haha.
  • I need some more practice at launches (only have about 4 in the bag so far).
    My best 0-60mph (very traction/driver limited): 4.75 secs
    My 60-100mph time of 4.85secs best that of the C6 Z06 Road and Track tested (4.9secs 60-100mph). I am quite happy with that as that means I am faster than a Z06 once I get WOT....atleast from a rolling start. :D
  • My peak acceleration g's in 1st gear are 0.799 so far. That's pretty good!

I have brought my car to the Little Tally Track three times now. When I went for the third time on December 29th, 2008, I brought along the Traqmate to gather some data. I was running 225/45/15 Toyo RA-1's and it was a cold (40's) day. I ran the entire track in 4th gear. Below is a number of runs on top of each other, all in the 1:07 to 1:08 lap time range. My personal best at this track is a 1:06 flat. Videos of me driving at this track can be seen on the Complete Video's page. My max lateral G recorded was 1.4 with steady state on the flat turns a little above 1.2g's. My braking was a little soft on these runs as I had too much front brake bias with the very aggressive H compound wilwood front and relatively whimpy Axxis Ultimates in the rear.

Below is a track map with the accel (>0.01, green), braking (<0.2, red) and coasting (black). Note my braking zones are a tad early and long cause of my brake pad setup that day. Also, people familar with this track will note how early I have to brake because of the speeds I get on the straights.
